GassTEK was established in late 2003, and was announced when Skagerak Energy launched their plans to build a gas power plant with CO₂ capture in the Grenland area. Several industrial companies, engineering groups and technology and research centres located in the Grenland and Kongsberg area stood behind the establishment.
